Governing Body at St James Infants School

For those of you with children at St James Infant School - whether son, daughter or grandchild - the governing body is there to represent you, the children and the staff - to help the school provide the best possible education for its pupils.
Without the children, staff, parents and governors St James Infant School wouldn't be the place that it is today - even Ofsted agrees it's one of the best (see their report).

The governing body is made up of 12 people. This includes Judith Amery - the Head Teacher. There are also 2 teacher governors. The rest of the governing body is made up of parents or members of the local community.
The governing body:
- has legal duties,
- has powers and responsibilities - any decision they make is based on Acts of Parliament and the policies of the Local Education Authority.
- Must act together - as a corporate body - only in extreme circumstances can the chair of the governing body make unilateral decisions.
- Work with the senior management team of the school to provide:
- strategic management for the school - determining the aims and values of the school,
- monitoring and reviewing broad policies, plans and procedures within which the school operates,
- ensuring accountability and insist that the best interests of all pupils are paramount in decision making.
It is not the job of the governing body to make any professional decisions, but to keep abreast of any changes in the school and make sure they are of benefit to the childrens' education. The main input lies in the areas of:
- monitoring and evaluating,
- overseeing the budget and
- strategic planning.
All the governors get together 6 times a year and in between this there are committee meetings. More information about the role of governors.

The governing body was awarded governing body of the year award in 2004
